Alestorm - Back Through Time

Genre: Scottish Pirate Metal
Label: Napalm Records

Ah, Scotland. The home of golf, haggis, bagpipes, and the kilt. And high seas piracy?
Sing-along choruses and Scottish instruments fill these riff and hook soaked songs of whiskey, rum, the ocean, squids, and whores. Don’t forget the whores. Elements of punk, thrash, and folk metal all come together to form this voyage, and in all it’s a pretty epic tale indeed.
Favorite tracks are “Buckfast Powersmash”, “Scraping the Barrel”, and the album closer (and longest track) “Death Throes of the Terrorsquid”.
7 out of 10.

Kvelertak – Self-Titled

Kvelertak - Self-Titled

Genres: Hardcore, Metal, Punk, Rock
Labels: Indie Recordings, The End Records

As anyone who comes along these parts knows, we don’t get much punk reviewed. So when I was offered to review Kvelertak’s debut full length, I jumped at it immediately. Then when I saw it has John Baizley’s trademark style of art for the cover, I was immediately intrigued even further.
I mean, fuck man, it’s an OWL with TENTACLES and FLOWERS and WOMEN!
Anyway, the music. Kvelertak are a strange Norway band that mixes a couple genres together, but mostly it’s hardcore and punk at it’s… hard core. Bad joke. Screaming in their native tongue, which throws the listener off at first, Kvelertak’s self-titled is a gorgeous intro for those that haven’t heard them, and a refreshing change of pace from the standards in punk rock right now, where everything is English-spoken.
The album is full of rifftastic music that reminds me of everything from Black Flag to AC/DC, showing their influences off like it’s going out of style, with a vocalist that sounds like he should be in a nuthouse. In other words, pretty damn sweet. Throw in a couple instances of a blackening touch and some slightly death moments, and it’s a disc full of schizophrenic win; no wonder why Kvelertak has won two Spellmann Awards (Norway’s Grammy Award). It’s hitting North American shelves in eight days (with killer bonus tracks!), so go get it.
8.5 out of 10.

Eat The Living – Braaiiins

Posted in Reviews on February 25th, 2011 by Typhon

Genre: Death Metal, Punk
Label: Kitchen Vomit Records

Goreific Horror Grind masters and now two time E-MetalReviews/E-MetalSpace contenders for band with the hottest front woman who probably has a collection of he-groupies’ body parts in various places in her home, Eat The Living are back after finding a home with Kitchen Vomit Records! “Braaiiins”! is their second outing that’s layered thick with malevolent, melodic punk/grind infused with enough blood, grizzly ends and neonatal entrails (Ya’ll got a new song title right there…) to satisfy even the most macabre of grind fans. “Braaiiins” keeps the same over the top feeling that “Bloodbath” had, but features a bit more of a sharp/polished sound Eat The Living also take a step forward in the songwriting area as well. More complex sounding melodies are heard in songs like Wishmaster and Fish Hooks. “Braaiiins” also comes stocked with a re-release of my favorite song off of “Bloodbath” entitled, Bed Bugs. (Oh yeah!)

Overall: “Braaiiins” will be a surefire hit at your next Halloween party. You can bet your ass I’ll be using it to scare the fuck out of trick-or-treaters coming up our driveway! (That’s MY candy, you little fucks!)

9/10

Pistöns – We’re Pistöns

Pistöns - We're Pistöns

Genres: Punk, Speed Metal, Thrash
Label: Suffering Jesus Productions

Pistöns bring an album of ten hard hitting, ass kicking, and beer swilling rock songs in the vein of Motörhead and oldschool punk, with some metal riffs thrown in.
A trio if Italians who love to rock out with songs about rocking out, how cool their friends are, and how they are number one, Pistöns is a fucking great listen, and it’s goddamn hard to drive around without cranking the shit out of my car stereo and driving around with my windows down.
Oh, and the speed limit is impossible to obey with this going. They get a 7.5 out of 10.
So if you want to listen to some hard rock that will make you headbang, check out Pistöns. No commercialism, this is a kick to head of rock music.

Upcoming Exile On Mainstream Releases

Posted in Album Update, News on January 25th, 2011 by General Blaspheme

Astrosoniq | Quadrant
Already known for their spaced-out, sci-fi inspired brand of psychedelia, Quadrant sets a new pace to Astrosoniq‘s never ending trip into the realms of rock’s history. Knee-deep in a space-jam wonderland they wander through the tides of contemporary rock with ten anthems of sheer class, matured through their 10 years of history together as a band. This is Astrosoniq at their absolute best; pummeling drums, pounding bass lines, powerful riffs and effect-laden vocals, with more experimental and challenging elements than ever before, while still maintaining their hallmark sound. Quadrant is out in North America February 22, 2011.

Wive | Pvll
The music of Wive pulls from and fuses together a broad range of musical elements, including classical composition, electronic/glitch, melodic pop nostalgia and minimalist sensibilities. Quickly swinging from piano-lead waltzes to massive synth washes to straight-ahead melodic hooks, Wive creates an aesthetic that is both somber and hopeful. The recording of Pvll took place in various living rooms, basements, garages and closets in several locations as time, space, and temperature would allow. Utilizing the internet to bridge the gap between the members spread throughout Minnesota, the compositions were relayed back and forth to be honed, refined, dismissed or created, and then polished in a live room. Pvll is out in North America February 22, 2011.

The Antikaroshi | Per/son/alien
Per/son/alien is The Antikaroshi‘s way of telling stories by using only fragments or short lyrics. Having grown up in the East German punk/hardcore underground and raised by direct in-your-face lyrics, with subtleties not to stir up governmental attention, The Antikaroshi try to figure out where they stand now, over 20 years later. Approaching this culture and their music with the knowledge of these circumstances, The Antikaroshi admit that whatever is created will be just a trace – the bit within the byte. So the three-piece delivers an album full of struggles, inner conflict and uncompromising emotion. The sound is deeply rooted in post-rock back and the DC punk/hardcore explosion in the 90′s and even recalls many cherished records from the Touch & Go roster. Per/son/alien is out in North America March 8, 2011.

Beehoover | Concrete Catalyst
The Beehoover of 2010 are unstoppable. More potent than ever is the unclassifiable German duo’s attack, as they’ve honed to precision their unique combination of bass, drums and vocals, capture/release rhythms, the call and response between the two members, and those incredible riffs… Concrete Catalyst now sees the band elaborating their songwriting into unexpected finesse. Prog-laden textures create distinct walls of sound within the raging riffery, culminating into a monolithic album that is so much more than just a collection of songs, yet was recorded and mixed by the band in their own rehearsal room/studio in less than 30 hours. Concrete Catalyst is out in North America March 8, 2011.

Wino | Adrift
The first acoustic solo album from doom legend Scott “Wino” Weinrich, Adrift is easily the man’s most personal and powerful material to date. Stripped down to the bare minimum — just his voice and his guitar — the songs on Adrift follow classic American songwriting ideals offering a compelling mixture of emotion and storytelling. Wino is a man on his own in a boat without sails. He’s fighting against tides and storms, enjoying the moments of bright sunshine; bound to the will of something external — the wind, destiny and the drift. The twelve tracks on Adrift help elevate this already iconic musician to a new level of storytelling, setting Wino up to fall right in line with greats like Johnny Cash, Woodie Guthrie, Neil Young, Bob Dylan and other classic American songwriters. Adrift is out in North America March 8, 2011. Read General Blaspheme’s review.
