Nekro Drunkz – Live And Lewd

Posted in Reviews on July 1st, 2010 by Typhon

Genre: PornoGrind
Label: Independent

Woohoo!!! I’ve done two interviews with these booze swilling, track jockeys and now I FINALLY get to review some of their wares! Disgustor (vocals and drums) gave me two pieces of their shit, recorded in the ancient way of analog cassette!!! Today’s review of the Nekro Drunkz’s brand of unabashed bigotry, objectivism and “eeeeewww!” grind is a live tape!

Recorded at Pepper’s in Vancouver, Washington, Live And Lewd is pretty much just that. I really don’t have to write anything else since that’s what you get when you listen to this cassette… well, Side A anyway.

First off, the sound quality is amazing! I honestly thought that this was going to sound like it was recorded inside of a toilet bowl at the bottom of the ocean! But it pretty much puts you right in the crowd! Disgustor’s banter with the ravenous grind goers is hilarious (though at times, a little awkward)! His drumming is of cut-throat porno-grind quality and his vocals tear through the speakers like a rapist getting raped by another rapist in songs like Yeast Erection, Fecal Felatio and my personal favorite Cottage Cheese Cunt… yeah… Anyway, axeman Squid Nasty’s performance is a chaotic blend of vulgar noises that no guitar should make and female circumcising riffs! You honestly can’t go wrong on Side A!

Side B consists of two demos: Re-Animated Through Beer and Necro Demo. Both are slights against God and shouldn’t be listened to by anyone… but, since we’re all going to anyway, they rule in classic (insert monumental PornoGrind band name here) fashion! But… it’s the same shit that you’ve heard over and over and over again by bands of similar alignment. If smutty pussy bashing is your thing, then these guys are already up your ass! If not, stay the fuck away…

…I really liked this tape… I think the CIA has my phone taped now and I’m somehow a registered sex offender, just for listening to this tape!

Overall: Live And Lewd isn’t for everybody… but I’m sure you knew that one already. If you really want to get technical, it isn’t for ANYBODY. If fucking sucks and fucking owns simultaneously! A paradox of universe imploding proportions!

9/10

Live Review – Big John Bates and the Voodoo Dollz

Big John Bates and the Voodoo Dollz, April 15, 2010

When: Thursday April 15, 2010
Where: New City Suburbs, Edmonton, Alberta

Kicking off a killer night was The Grave Mistakes, a semi-local psychobilly band that from the start impresed me with their high energy intensity. After about three songs I knew straight up I wanted to support them with some merch sales. Miss Billie Kitten’s bass work supported the band with Jamie’s skin bashing while Brad Graves played guitar and sang songs about zombies, dying, and choking on the devil’s dick. It was an all-round awesome time with The Grave Mistakes on stage. Can’t wait to see ‘em again.

After The Grave Mistakes finished warming us up for a further ass kicking, Meanstreak hit the stage to throw a little more old school hard rock/heavy metal at us. Fronted by a man named Jay, they came on and played some AC/DC like rock with touches of Judas Priest and Motörhead. It was in fact Meanstreak that invited us to the show, and the main reason we (wifey and I) went. Fuck did they rock out, and the crowd went nuts for them. The solos were smoking hot metallic shards while the rhythm section were as solid as granite. The only thing that was slightly disappointing is that Jay’s vocals could have been turned up a bit, but that didn’t bother me that much because it was still raw, dirty, rock ‘n’ fucking roll. Long live Meanstreak.

After Meanstreak left the crowd panting, the headliner Big John Bates and the Voodoo Dollz hit the stage, and the nicely warmed crowd got fucking hot. I’m sure it was not just the rockabilly that the band pours out, but the burlesque girls with flaming nipple spinners helping as well. It was a two-for-one show with John Bates and co. on the stage: really good rock ‘n’ roll and half naked attractive women dancing at the same time. A cover of Judas Priest’s “Breaking the Law” should be especially noted because I never thought I’d hear a classic metal song get turned into rockabilly, and done well. Another special note goes to John’s bassist, Brandy Battery: she’s fucking hot folks. Her and Miss Billie Kitten are definitely the sexiest women I’ve ever seen playing upright basses, and both are worth the admittance alone.

All-in-all, we had an awesome night, seeing three bands we never heard before, and all three bands we’ll hopefully be seeing again.

Live Review – VNV Nation

Posted in Live Reviews, Reviews on March 21st, 2010 by General Blaspheme

VNV Nation, March 20, 2010

When: Saturday, March 20, 2010.
Where: New City Suburbs, Edmonton, Alberta

As the doors opened and the line of excited ticket holders began to file in, DJ Greg Gory was spinning some electro, hard industrial, EBM, and futurepop to get the crowd warmed up. And it worked.
When the opening band, iVardensphere, hit the stage, we were ready to move.

My second time seeing iVardensphere, this experience was even better. Scott and Chris were tighter, working the classics from Scatterface for all their worth as well as playing some new stuff which brought up a third man, Peter E., to help the beats.
About these new songs: They rocked. I think the followup to Scatterface is going to bring a ton more fans, and shake up the old ones. Awesome stuff.
If you’re ever seeing what’s happening at your local clubs and you get a chance to see iVardensphere, do it. You will not regret it.
After Scott and Chris cleaned up the stage, the legendary VNV Nation took it, and the crowd (including me) lost it’s shit. I know there are some throats that are still sore from the screaming. Mine is.
Running the gamut from Advance and Follow to the newest album Of Faith, Power, and Glory, VNV’s set was electric. Ronan barely stood still for most songs, only taking a mic stand onto the stage for slower songs. He also was getting the crowd involved intensely (hence the sore throats), getting us to sing along, to cheer, and even chatting occasionally between songs, or having shots with Greg Gory, and even downing some Jim Beam after the encore (“Ugh! That’s not whiskey!” – Ronan).
He even went on to say how much the band loved Edmonton, and that some people ask him why they wanted to come here. And it was because of the crowd. Which got the band even more cheers.
In the end, we made enough racket to get not one but TWO encores, which was just unreal for me, and the rest of the crowd too.
After the show was over, it was time to finish the night with the Black Polished Chrome afterparty with DJ Dervish (Scott Fox) and DJ Blue Jay. Awesome enough, you’d think, but then Ronan, Mark and Co. all joined in on the fun signing posters, shirts, and the like, taking pictures, and just chatting and hanging out with the crowd.
A perfect night.
