Lightning Swords of Death - The Extradimensional Wound

Genre: Blackened Death Metal
Label:
Metal Blade

Lightning Swords of Death have been making a name for themselves for the past seven years, causing quite a stir in the underground.
Now on Metal Blade they seem poised to cause a stir in metal’s overground too, and with this album, The Extra Dimensional Wound, I think the stirring stick got bigger.
Huge sounding black metal riffs from Roskva and Menno, played with a more deathy tone and thrash feel with a severe grim coldness pervading the entire proceedings are the order of the day. Autarch’s vocals are as strong as Hell itself, with a frozen drum sound from Thrudvang. Altogether they sound something like a perverse beast made from elements of Goatwhore, Morbid Angel, and Bathory.
7.5 out of 10.

Abigail Williams Album Set for Autumn Release

Saturday, July 24th, 2010

Candlelight Records today confirms September 28 as the North American release date for In the Absence of Light, the second full-length album from black metallers Abigail Williams. Recorded at Conquistador Studios in Cleveland, Ohio, the album was mixed by Peter Tagtgren (Dimmu Borgir, Immortal, Celtic Frost) and features artwork by Farron Kerzner (Nachtmystium, Lightning Swords of Death).

In The Absence of Light is true to the rules of black metal. The vocals are harsh and shrill, sounding like the product of a lacerated larynx. Guitars buzz, rip and roar alongside articulate, rapid licks and blazing solos. Drums slam and crash like exploding mortar shells, whether battering with blast beats, double-bass rolls or syncopated snare hits. And there is just the right amount of haunting keyboard washes, a noted difference to the band’s previous album In The Shadow of a Thousand Suns. Vocalist/guitarist Sorceron notes, “There is a lot less keyboards on the new songs. I like keyboards, but before we started this record we decided to get rid of a lot of them because we wanted to do something different.”

The album presents new band members, guitarist Ian Jekelis and drummer Ken Bedene. Joining Sorceron after Abigail Williams‘ final tour in support of In the Shadow of a Thousand Suns last fall, the trio quickly got to work writing material that would become In the Absence of Light. The album’s eight songs contain far more urgency then the band’s previous material; songs written exclusively by Sorceron.

“We let ourselves have much more room with writing this album, kind of a more open, free environment than any we have employed before,” reveals Sorceron. “We literally constructed the songs as we went. Ken would be in the drum room and Ian and I would be in the control room and we just played for hours. We would listen back and pick out what we thought was good and we put songs together. We recorded everything with much more ease and I think it has helped in capturing a very honest vibe.”

Formed in 2005, Abigail Williams have been called “a buzz band,” and “a band to watch.” They have endured more than their fair share of opposition, including revolving door member changes and in 2007 altogether disbanding. But through it all, the core of the band has kept a level head, a steady eye, and an unbridled passion for what they do. The band’s 2006 Legend EP and 2008 debut, In the Shadow of a Thousand Suns (produced by James Murphy and featuring Emperor drummer Trym Torson) have now sold a combined 35,000 in the US. The band has toured exhaustively including their most recent West Coast headlining dates.

Abigail Williams recently confirmed their first tour in support of In the Absence of Light. Kicking off September 29, the band will perform alongside headliners Immolation and Vader, as well as Lecherous Nocturne and Pathology, for four weeks. Tickets are on sale now.

Jungle Rot Drummer Leaves Band and Tour News

Saturday, July 24th, 2010

Jungle Rot

Death metal institution and Napalm recording artists Jungle Rot report the following regarding the departure of drummer Eric House: “Eric found himself in a personal crisis that demanded his utmost attention. Therefore, he had no choice but to leave the band. Since then, we have been jamming with our good friend Tony Ochoa (Sindrome, Speed Hate Kill) behind the kit, and things are sounding great! Tony is a ridiculously hard hitter and will be joining us on the road for the upcoming U.S. tour!”

In other news, Jungle Rot will soon be touring the US & Canada in support of the band’s latest album, What Horrors Await, released last year via Napalm Records. Support on this trek will come from Metal Blade recording artists Lightning Swords of Death and Woe of Tyrants. Comments founding vocalist/guitarist David Matrise: “We are stoked to get back out on the road in the U.S. and Canada! It’s been way too long! We expect to see you at the shows! No excuses! For all the fans in areas of the country we are not visiting on this tour, fret not! We will be doing more extensive touring in the spring after the release of our new album.”

Lightning Swords Of Death/Valdur

Monday, April 12th, 2010

Genre: Black Metal
Label: Independent

And here we are, face to face with a occasional metal mail treat, a black metal split! Let’s tear her open and see what goodies spring forth, shall we?

Lightning Swords Of Death - The name had me giggling over what a 2D fighter geek I’ve become… but the music tore my soul to fucking shreds! A sound this wholly depressive, yet hyperactive was enough for me to scratch my head until it was raw and bloody. How did they manage to mix these two polarized traits together without causing a black hole to open near by? I really shouldn’t dwell since the four songs on their half (including thirteen and a half minute behemoth, Path To Chaos) kill, rape and destroy in the most sinister display of USBM that this reviewer has ever bore witness to.

Valdur - A bit more on the grim side from their split-mates, the lads in Valdur do what they can to channel the dark essences of early Immortal, Burzum and Dark Funeral. They’re a befuddling mixture of refreshing, young energy and anti-progressive style that dizzies the listener and causes a want for more. Aggressive beats and rhythms nuke the soundscape into a desolate wasteland of cold, dark emptiness that is populated with roving phantoms that feed on the listener until there’s nothing left but a dried up husk of a metal freak that drools and mutters the same statement over and over again, “Valdur kills… Valdur kills… Valdur kills…”

Overall: A surprise kick in the ass from two formidable USBM heavyweights. More please!

9/10

Oh yeah… and then there’s this: I received a single from Valdur called Berserrker.

Pretty much what I’ve come to expect from these murderous masters of black metal. Aggressive, evil and raging with the strength of the most vile subterranean beasts of mythological lore, the song tears through the listener like some sort of… Berserker.

(I know it’s short. I know it’s kind of lame. Deal with it. Writing reviews for single songs is fucking difficult!)
