Ninth Moon Black - Chronophage

Genre: Instrumental Psychedelic Rock
Label: Independent
Format: Digital Promo (Freeman Promotions)

Ninth Moon Black hail from the USA, specifically Eugene, Oregon, right in the Pacific Northwest, and they are currently promoting their latest release of psychedelic rock instrumentals.
Having never heard of these chaps and lady before, I was very intrigued when I saw the album cover. I love the band name, and with a translated title to mean Time Eater, it just seemed right up my alley. Barely two minutes into the first track, “Renascentia”, and I knew I was going to like this.
The music really reminds me at times of Tool (especially their Lateralus era), and then the Pink Floyd elements kick in, opening whole new sound palettes that Ninth Moon Black explore. The songs all meld together, creating one gapless track in essence, but each song is truly it’s own at the same time, and it’s good enough to throw onto repeat for a few listens in a row.
One of the bonuses for everyone is that the album is available at Bandcamp for a Pay-What-You-Want. The link is below. Also, it will hit vinyl soon through Orca Wolf Records.
Favorite songs are “Via Dolorosa” and  ”Mors Carnis”.

Guyve – Smegma Studio Sessions (MCD)

Genre: Stoner Metal, Instrumental
Label: Independent

Ladies and Gentlemen! Presenting, the next big thing in laying on the floor after smoking some buds and listening to mind-altering music is here: Guyve’s Smegma Studio Sessions! This tiny audio disc contains three tracks that clock in at seventeen and one half minutes of pure aural delight! The heavy riffing and maniacal drumming is accented by strategically placed  distortion and odd bleeps and bloops that sound as if they came from a guitar swinging match in the studio. I’m also very pleased with the fact that this is an instrumental piece, seeing as though I’m sure that the addition of ANY type of vocals would detract from the amazing art these to Portlanders have given life to here. MORE!!! MORE!!! MORE!!! (And by MORE!!!, I mean a full-length next time) You trippy sounding fuckers!

Overall: If you love quasi-psychedelic noise rock that‘s as fun as Homer‘s insanity pepper hallucination with the Johnny Cash coyote, then Guyve is right up your acid THC caked alley!

9/10

Karma to Burn - Appalachian Incantation

Genre: Stoner Rock
Label:
Napalm Records

Almost-instrumental stoner rock? I’ll admit, I was a tad skeptical. After all, for the most part, stoner is a very vocal genre. Some exceptions to all rules are present, however, and Appalachian Incantation is a great exception to the rule (I haven’t heard the previous albums from KtB yet, so I don’t count them as exceptions).
All but two of the songs follow in KtB’s tradition of naming their songs with numerals, the other two being “Waiting on the Western World” and “Two Times”, which I must say adds a bit of mystique. No more song names to be remembered, it’s song numbers.
An added bonus to the band’s fans, and the genre’s fans too, is that the album was produced by Scott Reeder, bassist for Kyuss.
But, like I said, it’s a great rule-breaker for stoner rock, and a great album in general. It’s great for fans of Earth, Orange Goblin, Kyuss, and of course the Creators themselves, Black Sabbath.
7.5 out of 10.
