Waking The Cadaver – Beyond Cops, Beyond God

Posted in Reviews on September 24th, 2010 by Typhon

Genre: Deathcore, Crap
Label:
Candlelight Records

Honestly, I don’t think there’s any topping G.B.’s review of this album. It fucking blows.

Don’t get me wrong though. I’m not one of those guys that goes around spouting off about how shitty deathcore is. I actually think deathcore is pretty fucking badass if it doesn’t saturate everything. Keep it in moderation and it’s a heavy dose of brutality. But acts like this, Oceano, Impending Doom and a few others are what make people think that all deathcore is, is just a bunch of kids with gauged ears and sleeve tats grunting into a mic, blast beating songs to death and playing “complex” riffs. Ugh.

Waking The Cadaver lacks passion. There, I said it. You could literally play this back to back with any Disturbed album and I’d feel equally nauseated by the sheer lack of feeling or interest.

The vocalist just repeats the same burping gurgles over and over and adds some incredibly shitty pig squeals in from time to time, the bass is nonexistent, more so than usual in this genre, and the guitars are phoned in with one of those twelve pound grey bricks that you had to lug around in the eighties (which is ironic and sad considering both guitarists where in a band call The Adpet before joining up with Waking The Cadaver).

Overall: *Grooooooaaaaaan*

2/10*

* The 2 rating is simply for the effort the drummer throws out there and the pretty badass cover art. That’s it. Sedate The Cadaver…

Sarah Jezebel Deva – A Sign Of Sublime

Posted in Reviews on August 5th, 2010 by Typhon

Genre: Gothic, Blackened, Deathcore
Label:
Rising Records

…wait, wasn’t Angtoria Sarah’s “solo” project? Oh well. I really shouldn’t complain.

Apparently not being content with her slew of back up/assisting credits, Sarah Jezebel Deva springs forth from the shadows and hammers us with an onslaught of powerful, but catchy yet, haunting sonnets in, A Sign Of Sublime.

It’s quite a cocktail that makes up this potent intoxicant: the enchantress’s platinum pipes, a deathcore drummer (Max Blunos, ex-Trigger The Bloodshed), a godly, death metal bassist (Dave Pybus of Massacre), a gothic doomster on the board (Martin Powell, ex-My Dying Bride) and an inventive guitarist (Ken Newman). I don’t know about you guys, but I’m sloshed already!

I’m not really sure what people are going to be expecting when they check this album out. But I can tell you this: I wasn’t expecting what I heard at all. Which wasn’t a bad thing at all. I was expecting some gothicly infused, blackened rock ‘n’ metal… you know, what we heard on God has A Plan For Us All. This time however, we get this oddly awesome mixture of ‘core drumming, 80’s rock and pop melodies (Your Wonderful Chair), progressive tones in both the bass and guitar that sometimes dips into blackened territory (They Called Her Lady Tyranny). And, of course, the classically trained voice of Mistress Deva.

My one complaint? The very last track is a cover of Meredith Brooks’s Bitch… it’s a decent cover, I am just so fucking tired of that song! Although… imagining Sarah as a “goddess on her knees” was all too enticing… I MEAN! Umm… yeah. I didn’t dig it.

Overall: An great album from a powder keg of brilliant musicians! Sarah’s voice is amazing as usual and the songs stick with you long after you’re finished listening.

9/10

Heretic Soul – Born Into This Plague

Posted in Reviews on July 28th, 2010 by General Blaspheme

Heretic Soul - Born Into This Plague

Genres: Deathcore, Death Metal
Label:
Rotten Corpse Records

Turkey’s Heretic Soul are a brand new band to me, never even hearing of them until last night. And have I been missing out or what?
Born Into This Plague is a good example of new school thinking melded to an old school genre. The riffs are chunky, chuggy, and of a somewhat technical nature, but there’s still a fair amount of melody going on. It’s like listening to a Swedish band that moved to Florida for a year before writing their album.
The drumming on the album is fast, with some seriously awesome grinds and fills, while the bass and guitar work nicely together to bring not only stuff you can bang your head to, but also stuff that will crush your face if you’re not careful. It’s really heavy sounding stuff. But, the vocalist/guitarist Sarp Keski is definitely the star here. He has a couple different voices that he uses, ranging from a deep gutteral to a deathcore scream, and he’s great at choosing what technique to use to gain maximum impact.
Throw in the fact that these four dudes are barely in their 20′s, and their signed to a small but good American label, I think they’ll soon be in a position where you won’t be able to miss their name.
Favorite songs are “Beyond Hatred”, “Suffering From Existence”, and “Mental Decay”.
8 out of 10.

Pain After Death – 2010 Demo

Posted in Reviews on July 22nd, 2010 by Typhon

Genre: Hardcore, Metalcore, Deathcore
Label: Independent

This demo was given to me by Travis Neal of Divine Heresy after their show earlier this month. “It’s my bass player’s new band. He plays guitar.” he said. I replied with a simple, “Cool.” But then… I asked it… “Wasn’t he in Nile?” Travis kind of cocked his eyebrow up and said, “Yeah. Makes you wonder why he’s with us, doesn’t it?” I laughed.

This demo is actually rough cuts of some songs off of their upcoming debut album, I Just Want To Get My Life Straight With God. And Jesus Christ, let me tell ya! These guys are all over the goddamn board! Death metal growls that give way to metalcore screams that bleed into clean semi-whining and a few indescribable styles in-between! The same kinda goes for Mr. Joe Payne’s axe grinding; death metal riffs and morph into hardcore chugs and even some Behold… The Arctopus-ish mind shredding! *Whew*

The overall feel of this demo is that of indecisiveness as to what the fuck they want to commit to as a band. It works for a demo, but I’m not entirely sure if the album itself will be able to hold up the same. I’m still excited as all to hear it though…

Truth be told, they kind of cheaped my loyalty with a Walter Sobchak sound bite… “This is what happens when you FUCK A STRANGER IN THE ASS!!!”

Overall: It an awesome mess of genre fucking death/metalcore/hardcore/schizophrenia… I like it, you probably will too.
