Regurgitation – Clitoraldectomy

Posted in Reviews on May 27th, 2011 by Typhon

Genre: Brutal Death Metal
Label: Comatose Music

Oh no… did Lance Ozanix start another band?

Or, if you’re not familiar with Skitzo

“I do so love those incredibly generic/over used to the point of “regurgitation” death metal monikers.” he said with a layer of sarcasm so think that you could slice through it with a cutlass. Ugh. Really guys? Not, “Violent Eructation?” Not, “Pharyngeal Ejection”? Not even something as simple as “Puke”, “Vomit” or even, “RETCH”? You had to choose one of the single most uninspired medical nomenclatures in the death/grind genre?

::Plays Clitoraldectomy once, twice and then a third time, invoking a “friendly chat” with a less that understanding Christian neighbor:: I officially revoke my bitchfest about the name of this band. Regurgitation plays some of the most well composed (albeit, still sloppy at times) brutal death metal/grind that I’ve have heard… EVER!

Apparently, Clitoraldectomy was supposed to be released something around nine years ago as a full length album. I wonder what the story is there, since I’m having a hell of a time finding any information about it online. Nevertheless, I’m about as happy as Arnold Schwarzenegger with an underpaid maid that somebody rescued this five song EP! And I’m even more house help raping ecstatic that one of those five songs is a cover of Suffocation’s Infecting The Crypts!

Oddly enough, this vocalist doesn’t sound like he’s retching all over the studio during these recording as one such as myself (re: an idiot) might of thought based on the band name. Nope. Just some deep as fuck, guttural growls from the bowels with an occational shriek thrown in for goreific effect. Also used with great effect, are the fucking guitars! As speedy as Gonzales and far less annoying. Blazing riffs and lowest registered chords are all over this EP and manage to illustrate just how wrong some people are when they say that it doesn’t take any talent or brains to play guitar in a brutal death metal band. (You know who you are… Jason…)

Overall: This band may seem generic at first glance, right down to the, “raped, strangled and murdered” cover art. But once you’re balls deep inside Clitoraldectomy, you’ll see all the gore hound glory it has to offer!

Cerebral Bore – Maniacal Miscreation

Posted in Reviews on May 25th, 2011 by Typhon

Genre: Brutal Death Metal, Grindcore

Label: Earache Records

Based on the name (one of the most badass weapons in first person shooter history), I’m guessing that Brain Drill broke up (again), reformed and sort of renamed themselves.

:: Actually listens to Maniacal Miscreation:: Ok, so it’s DEFINITELY not Brain Drill, thank the maker. Cerebral Bore has been kicking around the U.K. for about six years, releasing two demos and a single, shredding riffs and faces while busting heads and grooves wherever they may roam. But finally, someone took notice and signed these brutal death metalers. And now, we have Maniacal Miscreation! Eight tracks of broken glass, gasoline and razorwire! A glowing review MUST be imminent…

But first, this gripe:

Man, these are some pretty average vocals. I mean, they’re almost so run-of-the-mill that it becomes painful. You know the kind I’m going on about, don’t you: growl, squeal, grunt, repeat… wait, what? IT’S A CHICK? Well that changes… absolutely nothing! (That’s equality for you.) What they are is what they are and that’s all there is to it. A set of ovaries isn’t going to change that.

Now that that little piece of FUCK YOU to the promo writers is complete, we can carry on to the meat of this album: everything else! I know that the word “brutal” is thrown around a ton nowadays. But my friends, believe me when I say that this band completely replaces Webster’s Dictionary’s definition of the word! Fuck! The word altogether is now useless! Brutal Death Metal shall now be known as Cerebral Bore Death Metal. Now, when someone gets a savage pummeling you must say that they were, “Cerebral Borely beaten”. In Mortal Kombat 3, now you must enter a code to finish your opponent with a Cerebral Boreality. Etc…

Stepping back and taking a listen to the instrumentation is almost destructive since everything blends together to make this firestorm of an album come together so seamlessly. But if I must, then I must. The riffs in this album are concussive! Every chord is a broken rib, played, mended and then re-broke! Bass-wise, I have to say that I stoaked to even hear the fucking thing, let alone be astounded that a fast played death metal bass can sound so damn great! The drums are technical, violent and far too fast for anyone who may want to emulate them later. They’re probably my favorite ANYTHING attached to this album.

Overall: Yes, yes. The vocals are serviceable. But the rest of the band is what you want to focus on here. It’s polished to a blinding shine, technical grind for those of you who like newer Napalm Death, The Berzerker and the first Whitechapel album.

Volturyon – Coordinated Mutilation

Volturyon - Coordinated Mutilation

Genre: Brutal Death Metal
Label: United Gutteral

Volturyon, when seen just as a band name, to me does not strike me as death metal. I’d say something more like power metal or even industrial metal. But wow. These guys are as brutal as a club to the nuts and a knife to the face.
They don’t bring too much new to the table, but rather take what’s been done and give it their own flavor and flare. And fuck is it a great ride.
Something is definitely here for fans of Cannibal Corpse, Bloodduster, and Cryptopsy, as well as any other gory death metal band.
Interesting trivia: the singer, Olle, has the same last name as me. I wonder if we’re related somehow?
Favorite tracks are “Savage Gluttony”, “Ravaged”, “Coordinated Mutilation”, and “Sadistic Molestation”.

Impaled – The Last Gasp

Impaled - The Last Gasp

Genres: Brutal Death Metal, Medical Death Metal
Labels: Willowtip, Tankcrimes

I bought The Last Gasp based solely on the cover, and I’m so glad I did.
First I ordered it from Tankcrimes on 12” vinyl, which is a gorgeous piece of art in itself (the Impaled logo and the title on the cover are foiled!), and then I found the CD at HMV finally last night (no foil on it though). The cover that inspired this purchasing is both disgusting and awe inspiring for me.
Just like the music contained within.
This is the kind of death metal that a lot of fans of the genre are going to want to hear. Fast, catchy riffs that are sometimes heavy (“All Gut, No Glory”) or sometimes just brutally face kicking (“You Are The Dead”) with solos that are little mini-songs in themselves, and even have their own titles (“Debris All That You Can Be”, “The Obesity Epidemic”, etc.). I think these guys have definitely listened to their classics like Entombed, Death, Carcass, and the like, but also tons of punk seems to have been a steady diet of at least one of the members. It’s got a little bit of that feel. Add in the fact that members and ex-members were part of Exhumed, Engorged, Hoarfrost, Ghoul, and more, it’s like a death metal orgasm, covered in cow parts.
Lyrically, these guys are very medical, using text book terminology to sicken as well as make you laugh, complete with a band photo with the caption “The Thanatologists of St. Julien’s”, a modified prescription Rx logo (Rxxx) and other fun bits.

Decimation – Anthems Of An Empyreal Dominion

Posted in Reviews on September 26th, 2010 by Typhon

Genre: Brutal Death Metal
Label:
Comatose Music

Word of advice: PLEASE don’t start off your brutal death metal album with a three and a half minute long instrumental/sample saturated intro! It doesn’t set the mood and it always gets skipped over anyway.

Now that that has been taken care of; Decimation, uh… decimates the competition with Anthems Of An Empyreal Dominion! Crushing death metal is always a plus in this house, and Decimation got a TON of airplay on the ol’ Victrola… that’s what I call my stereo, even though it’s not… Anyhow, Anthems is more or less a by the numbers brutal death metal album: deeeeep growls, furious guitar work, bone aching bass blaring and vigorous drum play meshed together in an orgy of blood, gore and mania! But there’s something about the way Decimation does their thing. A purity that goes unseen nowadays in the scene. And that scores high marks in my book!

Overall: If you’re looking for Brutal Death Metal that’s all KILLER, no filler, then Decimation is the way to fucking go! These guys don’t mess around!
