VoidWork - Horror/Forsaken

Genre: Dark Ambient
Label: Black Drone

Another dark ambient album from Black Drone, this time with the band VoidWork pushing the keys. And it’s another winner.
Atmospheric music that’s inspired by early 20th century horror literature and recent horror films, and it’s actually putting me into a movie-watching mood. It’s the perfect soundtrack to reading horror novels too!
Ann-Marie Thim provides vocal work for some of the tracks too, and she’s got a gorgeous gothic voice.
I think you should check this out if you’re a fan of the dark ambient genre, or a fan of old horror films. It’s definitely a refreshing listen, and original.

Asbaar – Corona Veli Aurei

Asbaar - Corona Veli Aurei

Genre: Dark Ambient
Label:
Black Drone

Alright now. If you’ve been a visitor for awhile, you know my opinion dark ambient. In short, for newcomers, there’s two types of dark ambient. Really fucking good, or pure shit. There is no middle ground, that I have heard yet anyway.
And so here we sit with Asbaar, a Spanish one-man band with a dude known as Marc Merinee behind it. It’s actually really fucking good. I’m not getting bored, I’m not wondering when it will be over, and I’m not getting uninspired to write this review.
I’m impressed by the more organic sounds, winds and the like, that fuel the ambiance, rather than the new wave of “Let’s sound like Sunn O)))!” bands that are out there, or the “Let’s hold one key down on my keyboard for thirty minutes then call it a song” bands that are way too often rearing their heads. This is ACTUAL dark ambient, the kind that takes talent and thought to make.
So please, check out the CD, and then check out the photography by Manel O. Company that inspired the CD.

CrepusculaR – Deep Slow Majesty

CrepusculaR - Slow Deep Majesty

Genre: Drone
Label:
Black Drone

Another CD-R I never expected in my mail box, CrepusculaR arrived from the label that released it. The disc itself features relatively boring drones that are not all that original.
White noise covers most of what’s going on, with some really low bass under it, and keyboard sounds that sometimes sound like keyboards, not just drones. But for some reason, I don’t feel it. I like drone for the most part, even writing some of my own, and this band I just cannot get into. I don’t know why.
I feel horrible for saying this, but it is how I feel about it. If you’re looking for good drone, don’t go to CrepusculaR’s Deep Slow Majesty. There’s better stuff out there, probably from CrepusculaR themselves. But this disc just isn’t really worth it unless you’re a hardcore drone fan, which I’m not.

Bring Me the Head of Orion – Courting Leviathan

Bring Me the Head of Orion - Courting Leviathan

Genre: Drone Metal
Label:
Black Drone

Here we go. This is the kind of drone metal I’m into. This is the second disc that came from Black Drone unexpectedly, and it’s fucking great.
Not the most original in idea, but in execution Bring Me the Head of Orion are definitely a standout act. They are kind Sunn clO)))nes, but that’s okay with me. Sunn O))) kick ass, and in an area of metal that of recent date has seen a major influx of similar bands, to be able to stand out in a huge crowd is a big thing.
If you’re into crushing guitars, intense bass, and a distinct lack of percussion, all wrapped up in 20+ minute long compositions, I would definitely recommend checking out BMtHoO.
