Excruciator – 2009 Demo

Monday, February 22nd, 2010

Genres: Thrash

Label: Unsigned

Ok, so Destruction and Morbid Angel got together one night in an abandoned castle with the intention to create the perfect mix of death metal and thrash metal. Finding out at the loss of several helpless villagers, they couldn’t approach this undertaking with just any old victim in a neighboring village. So they sent for four young lads from Portland, Oregon that had astronomical Thrashiclorian counts and after less than a year of tinkering around… viola! Excruciator is born! And the four track demo they’ve been generously handing out over the past couple of months is a brilliant piece of thrashamabilia that’s sure to satisfy even the most diehard of old schoolers thrashers! Not to mention the badass Execration cover of Submission To Falsities for the old school DMers! Don’t believe me? Fuck you! Check this shit out for yourself at any one of their several live dates across the Pacific Northwest!

Overall: Wicked old school thrash that rivals anything I’ve heard from several thrash titans lately. Bra-fucking-vo Excruciator!!!

Spellcaster – 2010 Demo

Sunday, February 21st, 2010

Genres: Power Metal, Speed Metal, Heavy Metal

Label: Unsigned

Having been a fan of Spellcaster since their inception (back when they were called Leatherwitch), some may find this review to seem biased. But I assure you that it’s not. Seconds into this three song demo, Spellcaster show that they do not fuck around with heavy metal. They fucking own it! Vocalist Tomas “Tommy Turbo” Adams channels the awesome powers of legendary front men such as Rob Halford, Jon Bush, Eric Adams and a to lesser extent Joey Belladonna. Lead guitarist Cory Boyd rips and shreds through all three tracks with the ferocity of an axeman possessed, backed by Tyler Loney, the speed riffing machine! Drummer Shad Covert beats and rolls with 100% efficiency (that’s a lot of awesome crammed onto one stool!), ensuring the wrecking of you neck! Some of you may remember our old friend Gabe Franco (from Seventh Gate) on bass, booming and bangin’ in the way only he can! This demo is crammed full of all sorts of old school heavy metal with elements of power, doom and speed metals all rolled into one first pumping, head banging, horn throwing good time!

Overall: Pound for pound, member for member, Spellcaster is one of the best bands that carries the old school heavy metal sound I’ve heard in a while! If you consider yourself a fan of true metal, then this demo is a must own!
