Sagiqacea/Grass - Split

Genres: Doom, Sludge
Label: Anthropic Records

One of my favorite labels has sent me a shiny new record! And it’s on transparent green vinyl! And it’s a fucking MONSTER of a record too!

Needless to say, I was pretty stoked to give this a spin, even on my asshole of a record player that doesn’t seem to want to send sound to the speakers properly. And for some reason, maybe because it understood the awesomeness of the vinyl, the speakers were sounding great. Thank you record player. Thank you.

Now, on to the review!

Side A is Philly’s Sadgiqacea, facestomping their way through two tracks (“The Great Divide”, “Avianizer”). Doom as doom can doom, these guys are so fucking awesome. I thought their older tracks on Bandcamp were great, but these two songs throw those into the mud. If you’re into stuff like Five Will Die, Black Tusk, Fight Amp, Bison B.C., and the Side B band Grass, you should check these guys out. If you don’t know what I’m talking about when I mention those bands, think of an angry Black Sabbath with Henry Rollins getting punched in the face by Justin Broadrick as the vocalist. 10 out of 10.

Side B is another Philly doom as fuck band, who continue to kick the shit out of their listeners and amps after Sadgiqacea leave off, who they also follow in the same vein musically. I feel sorry for stages and moshers that these guys play for, because if this is indicative of all their stuff (my first time hearing Grass), they destroy shit. Bleeding ears, noses, and knuckles all around. 10 out of 10.

Math should be obvious here. 10 out of 10.

Sadgiqacea’s Van Stolen

Tuesday, June 21st, 2011

The following is a message from Shannon, owner/operator of Anthropic Records:

Dear Friends, Supporters, Listeners, Community Members,
The band Sadgiqacea had their tour van parked on 13th and Carpenter in South Philadelphia today when it was stolen around the hours of 12-7pm.  Everything they owned was in the van including all of their merch and gear. Total estimated loss of gear and merch is about $8,500. I am including a link to the phillymetal.com post where a list of their stolen items are posted. If there is anything you can do to help, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you so much for your time and energy.

Peace and Love,
Shannon

Like the message board post says, please re-post this on your own sites, blogs, Facebook, YouTubes, even MySpace, whatever. Let’s first and foremost get Sadgiqacea their gear back, and hopefully in the process get the assholes who stole it a bigger criminal record.

Anthrosphere Volume II

Anthrosphere Volume II

Genres: Doom, Hardcore, Sludge
Label: Anthropic Records

Philadelphia’s own Anthropic Records lets another free compilation CD out of it’s doors, and it’s chock full of Philly’s greatest doomsayers and sludge masters.
It features tracks from Bubonic Bear (“Throat Cancer Mountain”, 8), Wormrider (“Heroic Brew”, 7), The Green Evening Requiem (“Debilitation Tide”, 9), Ladder Devils (“Pyramid”, 8), Distress Signal (“Untitled”, 7), Thee Nosebleeds (“Fenderhead”, 7), Deathbeds (“Danny Husk”, 9), Vulcan (“Stranger in Black”, 7), and Dirt Worshipper (“The Absence of Color and Light”, 9).
In all, it’s pretty fucking sweet, and a good way to wreck your eardrums. If you’re into doom and sludge, it’s perfect, especially since it has a nice hardcore edge to some of the songs to throw in some variety.
8 out of 10.

The Green Evening Requiem – Decomposer

Tuesday, May 4th, 2010

Genre: Progressive, Black, Doom, Death, Sludge
Label:
Anthropic Records

I was all sorts of overjoyed to receive this particular album in the mail the other day and let me tell you why; The Green Evening Requiem and their label Anthropic Records (which drummer/vocalist Evan Madden runs) were some of the first people to send material to E-MetalSpace. It’s been about two years but still, it’s always nice to have return business!

I first heard The Green Evening Requiem through their demo from 2005. And I was head over balls in love with their sound! It was a sinister mixture of progressive blackened death metal and it left it’s scorched mark on my soul. And since then, a split, a promo and a full length have passed me by, so I’m a little out of touch with the Philly based trio. But as soon as I popped Decomposer in my player, it felt like I hadn’t missed a thing! They’ve built up a complex, progressive tinge to all of their tracks and added a heftier dose of doomy sludge to the mix! I was in metal-geek heaven! While the heavier vocals sit in this weird blackened hardcore limbonic area, there are some cleans that smooth out some of those bumps. Not to mention the progressively sludgy riffs and intriguing drum choices  that are full of hooks and jabs to your genre biases!

Overall: It’s not exactly what a lot of your would expect from a couple of the dudes in Woe and Woods Of Ypres, but it’s pretty goddamned awesome in my book!

8.5/10
