Sargeist - Let the Devil In

Today, Moribund Records confirms November 9th, 2010 as the release date for Sargeist‘s long-awaited new album, Let the Devil In. Dedicated Moribund terrorists right from the start, Sargeist’s last full-length album was 2005′s critically acclaimed Disciple of the Heinous Path, preceded by their classic Satanic Black Devotion debut in 2003. Featuring vocalist Torog and drummer Horns of cult Finnish horde Behexen as well as the six-string sorcery of Horna mastermind Shatraug, here on their third album Sargeist display that black metalled orthodoxy need not spell creative death, that occult mysticism is still ripe for exploration if the words match the deeds – and especially if you have the songs to back them up. One anthem to the horned one after another, Let the Devil In masterfully balances raw, bloodcurdling passion with poised, steely-eyed professionalism: a new classic of traditional black metal is born!

Says Shatraug regarding the imminent release of Let the Devil In, “The forthcoming Sargeist album took us more than five years to make. After two albums, the standard we had raised was needed to be met with a liturgy surpassing the previous works, and for that reason alone, it took such a long time to complete the new work. Finally, when everything started to fall in place, it didn’t take long. Lyrically, Let the Devil In is a continuation of the heinous path we had chosen – that of black magic, necromancy, and worship of Satan. The result is definitely the strongest of Sargeist yet, taking all the assets of our past with a new Satanic illumination.”

Also watch for a split 7″ from Sargeist and Drowning The Light, out on Moribund Records, September 29.

Fuck the Facts – Unnamed EP

Fuck the Facts - Unnamed EP

Genre: Grindcore
Label: Independent

FTF, one of my favorite grind bands ever since I heard the song “Dear Shit Book”, have recently released a new 7″, the Unnamed EP.
It’s fast, short, and vicious as hell. If you’ve ever heard FTF before, this is pretty much what fan have come to expect. It’s not a huge change since Disgorge Mexico, with a more death metal sound and some touches of noise, but it does show growth.
Of course, if you’re looking for the same FTF that was around circa 2003, you’re going to be sorely disappointed. But, after hearing the first track, you’ll know – this is going to be a classic record from Fuck the Facts.
One of the coolest things about the release besides the music and the fact that it’s totally indie, it’s the art. Mel, the vocalist for those that don’t know, did the art for it. And I fucking love it. See below for pictures.
If you’ve never heard this band before, think of newer Pig Destroyer, Leng Tch’e, and a little Napalm Death.

Black Tusk/Fight Amp 7” Split

Posted in Reviews on April 13th, 2010 by General Blaspheme

Black Tusk Fight Amp Split 7"

Black Tusk – Sludge, Doom
This side consists of only one song, called “Fatal Kiss”, and it’s a heavy-ass track full of angst and anger. Too bad something is wrong with my record, the needle gets stuck in one messed up groove, so I have to fuck around to hear it. Either way, it’s a great track, and now that these guys are releasing a full-length with Relapse, I’m happy.
FYI, these guys are from the same Savannah, Georgia scene as Baroness, and I’d recommend them to fans of similar bands.
7.5 out of 10.

Fight Amp – Sludge, Punk
A pair of songs from Fight Amp, similar in style in some ways to Black Tusk but with a bit more of a punk feel and attitude to them, but again something is wrong with this side of the record. Stuck in a groove.
In the end though, after a little bit of fucking around, I’m finished with Fight Amp’s side. And I like it.
7 out of 10.

With art from Baroness’ John Dyer Baizley, Brutal Panda Records has put out a pretty strong split between two bands that are different enough that they should be able to appeal to different fans, but similar enough that the record should also cross-pollinate fans.
I don’t know if it’s indicative of the entire run or not, but my record being messed up is dropping the final score on the split a little.

Coffins/Spun In Darkness 7″ Split

Posted in Reviews on April 2nd, 2010 by General Blaspheme

Coffins/Spun in Darkness Split 7-Inch

Genres: Death Metal, Doom
Label:
Horror Pain Gore Death Productions

I ordered this nifty little package forever ago, and it arrived forever ago, and I haven’t listened to it once until today. And wow. I should have listened to it forever ago.

Coffins’ “Corpse Parade” is a wicked doomy death metal song that slowly crushes you to death. This ain’t no ordinary Japanese metal band; think along the lines of Gallhammer if you’re not familiar with Coffins’ work, but with less black metal. Good stuff.
7.5 out of 10.

Spun in Darkness come out of Las Vegas and bring “Bloodless” to this 7-inch. It’s a pretty straight up death metal song, old school styled and fucking good. Pretty much a perfect match for HPGD’s roster.
7.5 out of 10.

In total, with good tunes and a nice little package, the Coffins/Spun in Darkness split is pretty good. I definitely recommend it if you’re fans of either band, or if you’re into the scenes represented at all. And for the low price of like $6 or so, you can’t go wrong.
7.5 out of 10.

Miserycore/Unholy Force – Unleashing Hell’s Wrath

Posted in Reviews on February 25th, 2010 by General Blaspheme

Miserycore/Unholy Force - Unleashing Hell's Wrath

Genres: Black Metal, Thrash
Label:
Morbid Kult

A pair of Chilean bands singing hymns to Satan in Spanish?
SHIT YEAH!
It’s a really easy review here. Black metal and thrash collide and ten solid songs are presented, with a slick cover from Sickness666 I should add.
Miserycore is slightly less thrash, more of a straight black metal, while I find Unholy Force to be the opposite.
Favorite tracks from each is “Preludio destructivo” from Miserycore and “Communion of Death” from Unholy Force.
Get a hold of Morbid Kult and get a copy. It’s great.
8 out of 10.
