Pinkzilla – 2010 Demo

Posted in Reviews on October 31st, 2010 by Typhon

Genre: Stoner Rock, Punk
Label: Independent

Ok… So… Honest question: When you hear the name “Pinkzilla”, what are you supposed to expect? Brutal Queercore? Progressive Kaiju Metal? Super Stonery Sludge-Core? …wait, that last one was right? Sweet! Works for me!

Pinkzilla hail from the coastal town of Seaside, Oregon… odd place for completely awesome band such as this to spring from (seriously, one moderately sized arcade, about a million hotels that are insanely expensive, a dull as shit beach and over priced restaurants! I mean, I know it’s a “resort” town, but you’ve got to give people more than faux-quaintness before they’ll cough up fifteen dollars for bowl of clam chowder!).

This demo pulls influence from everything from Black Sabbath to Orange Goblin to Cephalic Carnage. And it all works out great! The vocals jump from smokers cough yelling to limp sing-song speak occasionally, which is fine since the balance swings greater to the yelling side.

Instrumentally though, holy shit! The riffing is chunky as hell in some areas, then as rapid as an eighty-nine year old man’s heart beat while watching BDSM porn! The drumming to fucking sweet too! Changing it up without warning and flipping the groove with extreme prejudice! Much ca also be gushed about with the bassist as well! Funk-ay! Crazy bass lines are tossed out left and right with seemingly little to no effort. It all feels as natural as streaking through the quad.

Overall: An up and coming band that doesn’t care if you give them any attention. But I do! Check these guys out! Spark one up and let Pinkzilla wrap their giant hand around your throat and show you what’s what!

Funeral Rain Records Brings The Resurrection – Part 2

Posted in News on October 30th, 2010 by General Blaspheme

As part of the news of Funeral Rain Records releasing the new Ritual album The Resurrection, I have decided to give FRR another, different, kind of resurrection.

Gone are the days of under-fifty-copies releases, unless the band I’m releasing is REALLY fucking good, and gone are CDRs, unless the band is REALLY fucking good and the packaging is going to be spectacular.
Gone are the days of under-promoted free digital releases. The download stats on my free compilation and the or, ganic E.P. are atrocious. You and I should be ashamed of ourselves, not telling enough people of these free gems!
And gone are the days where the albums I’m releasing have the tag FR##.

Because this is The New Funeral Rain Records. So with the release of Ritual’s The Resurrection there will be a new cataloging system. Ritual’s The Resurrection shall be TNFRR1, while Into the Mouth of Hell, the compilation I’ve been working on for awhile now, will be TNFRRC1.

More details on all of this are coming soon as I continue to rearrange the way things work here. Because this isn’t just about me, it’s about you, the fans of music as well.

Fuck The Facts – New Album Update and Title Revealed

Posted in Album Update, News on October 30th, 2010 by General Blaspheme

Stolen from a note on Facebook:

“Back in January we put together a little home studio and spent the month tracking a majority of what will be our next full length album. Everything was shelved while we went on various tours, released our Unnamed 7” EP and then Disgorge Mexico: The DVD. But now having all of that out of the way, we are recording the finishing touches of this new album which we have aptly titled Die Miserable, after the feeling I have every time I need to write a quote for a new album.

“Mixing will be handled by our long time friend (aka: sucker) Craig Boychuk. He’s pretty much had his hands and ears on almost everything we’ve recorded over the last few years, so we feel confident that he won’t totally fuck it up. We’re not very good at rushing out our full lengths, so we’re thinking this should see the light of day in the spring of 2011 via Relapse Records.

“Keep an eye out for updates, videos, blogs and all that shit bands put up when a new album is coming out. Even if our album isn’t any good, the garbage we’ll be posting to hype it up will be awesome.”

I know I for one am pretty fucking stoked.

Chad Frey – Begging For More

Posted in Reviews, Uncategorized on October 30th, 2010 by Typhon

Genre: Rock, Punk
Label: Independent

I’m almost having a hard time believing that this is the same Chad Frey that gave us Let’s Bomb The World…

Seriously, the songwriting has matured greatly with mad riffing and the occasional raw punk solo from guitarist Nathan Doutt (who also handles the bass and drum duties). On songs like Shocka Shocka Shocka and 6 Minutes Of Nonsense, there’s a bit of a Static-X influence in the riffing, while in others (namely Just A Myth and Bullied To The Grave) you’ll stumble upon some punk ’n’ hardcore ’tude, similar to what you’d find listening to The Casualties! Still more, there’s a cool Smashing Pumpkins meets Franz Ferdinand kind of vibe just schmoozing about!

Lyrically, I’m not sure what to say. There’s songs about the recent rash of school bullying leading to suicide and political nonsense… and songs about babies being crammed into microwaves. Is there a serious message here, or is he going for black humor in some elements?

And once again I find myself saying that Mr. Frey can’t seem to sing at all. But to be fair, he doesn’t sing so much as he just kinda talks with a constant inflection. I’ll be honest though, I’m still not sure if Chad’s vocal style is intentional or not. I’m too lazy to ask, so I’m just going to guess that it’s some kind of avant-garde humor.

Overall: A VAST improvement over Let’s Bomb The World… but still not exactly great. Never the less, I call it a win.
