Psycho – The Grind Years

Psycho - The Grind Years

Genre: Grindcore
Label:
Selfmadegod Records

Ah yeah. THIS is grindcore, folks. And I mean really real grind.
Psycho are apparently re-releasing their entire discography with Selfmadegod, and this particular listen contains 52(!) tracks from 1990 to 1994, consisting of various splits and 7″ releases. Included are the Mass Consumption 7″ and Shrunken 7″ as well as splits with Anal Cunt, Nasum, Rot, and more.
If you don’t know, Psycho’s grind is a little more on the punk side with some thrashy stuff happening, but it still has that sense of brutality. It’s great for fans of Nasum, Agathocoles, Heresy, Unseen Terror, and the like.
Oh, and fun fact – Garth Brooks (yeah, that one) makes a brief appearance on here too. It’s sweet.

Since Yesterday – The Artificial Truth

Since Yesterday - The Artificial Truth

Genre: Metalcore
Label: Independent

Since Yesterday are from Ankara, Turkey, which itself throws some interest in my face. Turkish. Metalcore. Hm.
So I gave The Artificial Truth a trip through my headphones and wow. I’m very surprised, because in general I don’t like metalcore. I think I’ve stated this before in another review, and probably I’ll state it again. But I’m really liking Since Yesterday’s brand of metalcore.
It’s got some really aggressive rhythms, with really nice leads and harmonies, and some really killer screams. Basically, it’s metalcore, done straight up and pure, with a perfect balance. I think hardcore and punk fans will like this, as will metalheads.

Troll – Neo-Satanic Supremacy

Posted in Reviews on March 12th, 2010 by Typhon

Genre: Black Metal
Label:
Napalm Records

After a nine year leave of absence, the legendary black metal powerhouse Troll is back in action and ready to start stealing souls! They’re latest effort, Neo-Satanic Supremacy, has some mighty big shoes to fill from it’s predecessors, especially with 1996’s Drep De Kristne and 2001’s (and last album before N-SS) Universal. Does it live up? Let’s read on…

A swirling, hellish vortex of slicing strings, nuclear blast beats and scorching synths welcome you from the very start of Neo-Satanic Supremacy! The vocal attack is a charred black rasp and bowel scrapping, low end growl alternation that does everything right with none the mess. Meanwhile, the synths (which, if done improperly can quickly turn an awesome album into a shit sandwich) complement the brooding moods and barbaric rhythms effectively in most cases. There’s a song or two where they should of cut back just a tiny bit, but over all they are very well done. As for the six-stringing… what can I say? They’re fast. They/re evil. They’re pure black metal!

Overall: If you dig everything from Xasthur to Ceremonial Castings to Leviathan to Dimmu Borgir, than Troll and Neo-Satanic Supremacy should be sitting pretty with you! Take a listen and shred your soul!

8/10
