Velvet Acid Christ – The Art of Breaking Apart

Velvet Acid Christ - The Art of Breaking Apart

Genres: Acoustic, Electro-Industrial
Label: Metropolis Records

Leave it up to Bryan Erickson to release the industrial album I want to hear.
But there is so much more here than just industrial on this album it’s unreal.
Drum machines and synths, the standards, are still present of course, but so is an acoustic guitar and a strong singing voice. Heavy and deep emotions fill the disc, and a nice sense of melancholy really pervades.
But, still, this is Velvet Acid Christ; even the guitar driven songs are still just so fucking dancy.
It’s a little hard to pick a favorite track on the first and second listens, but on the fourth listen they start to form. “Black Rainbows”, “Phucked Up Phreak”, and “Killing a Stranger” take the cake. But I still want to put down the title track too. It’s great.
Bryan Erickson is a genius.
9 out of 10.

Weltschmerz – Cry For War

Weltschmerz - Cry For War (CD)

Genres: Black Metal
Label: Independent

Cry for War in one word: kvlt. This is some really awesome black metal from the Netherlands.
Really cool melodies are hidden in the evil guitars, and the drumming is intense. Vocal-wise, Hreim’s a madman. This is a band you should keep an eye or two out for.
7.5 out of 10.

Wintersleep - Welcome to the Night Sky

Genres: Progressive Rock, Rock
Label: Labwork Music

Wintersleep’s biggest album and their third overall, Welcome to the Night Sky is ten tracks of awesome. Crashing guitars. Super rumbling bass. Intense drumming. Beautiful keys. The voice of a god. This is not an album to be missed.

Witchmaster – Trücizna

Witchmaster - Trücizna

Genres: Black Metal, Death Metal, Thrash
Label: Ibex Moon

This little gem came out November 7, 2009, and fuck does it kick ass.
It’s nice and heavy, like good thrash, but it’s hard as hell like black metal and death metal. “Total Annihilation” will appeal to all you Exodus fans, while the title track (which for those that aren’t in the know, is Polish for ‘poison’) will be more for all you Beherit fans.
But all of you will agree that there is something very special about this release, and it’s not just because it’s the first one in five years. It’s because the entire way through it is solid and not completely sane.
Metalgasmic solo at 3:06 into “Total Annihilation”, one of many throughout the album.
In fact, I think “Total Annihilaton” is my favorite track, followed closely by “Trücizna”.
In all, the album’s walking away with an 8 out of 10.

Wodensthrone – Loss

Wodensthrone - Loss

Genre: Pagan Black Metal
Label: Bindrune Recordings

After two split 7″ releases, these historic black metalers have finally released a full length album entitled Loss. A what a loss it could have been had I not received this demo for review or for you (the reader) for not stumbling upon this review, for I have such wonderful things to tell you! Loss harkens back to the days of yore, both in terms of style and in lyrical content. Style: Remember Diabolical Fullmoon Mysticism? Yeah. Place that here and add a hefty dose of melody, better production and sharper vocals and you might start to get an idea of what’s going on there. Lyrics: Loss is all about the darkest era of England’s past. A beautiful culture, fraught with war, disease and tyranny (oh my!). You start to develop a feeling of woe for the sick characters/gnarled landscapes that populate Loss. But then, the metal hits ya and you find new way of contorting your neck to the sinister riffs that are spilling out of you speakers! If you like feeling ravaged (in the only good way there is… umm… you fill in the blank there…) then pick up a copy of Loss.

Overall: Wodensthrone have unleashed one hell of an album here! Loss is just about as good as it gets when it comes to black metal… fuck, metal in general.

9.5/10
